Accommodation in Granada
In a valley of the Sierra Nevada mountain range lies the city of Granada. Though not large in comparison to many of Europe's top travel locations, Granada has its own charm owing to the city's roots in both Spanish and Islamic culture. Some of the most famous Islamic buildings from the Mediterranean region are found in the city, and some of them were long ago covered with Catholic cathedrals. One of the most interesting buildings is the Abbey of Sacromonte, which is located in a neighbourhood of settled gypsies. The Abbey was built in the 17th century as a reliquary for the Baetica, and it contains several important works of art, catacombs, and a museum for the church relics. Of the Islamic structures, none is more easily recognized as the Alhambra. Overlooking the valley, the palace housed many of the city's most prominent citizens within its fortified walls. On the site of the Nasrid mosque in the city below, there is now the Cathedral of Granada. The Cathedral is built of Renaissance and Baroque elements and contains many paintings and the prayer statues of the Catholic Monarchs. Accommodation in the city will all provide great access to many sites and put others within walking distance.
