Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any familiarity with the area, I am one block south of Sunset Blvd., a 5 minute walk to Vine St to the east, and 5 minutes to Grauman’s Chinese and the Kodak/Academy Awards theatre to the northwest. The nearby metro stops are Hollywood/Highland and Vine/Hollywood, which are each about a 5-7 minute walk. Take the Hollywood/Highland metro one stop to Universal Studios.

Is it a safe neighborhood?
My neighborhood is the only neighborhood in the middle of Hollywood that has houses, children riding bicycles, and a robust Halloween. There is a park one block to the south with jungle gyms for little kids. And my guest house is extremely serene. This is a great area for teens, as there are many attractions, shops, and other young people all around. The area is very “Hollywood” and yet very safe because my street ‘dead-ends’ on both sides (so there is no traffic going fast on the street), and because the Hollywood Police Station is 3 blocks away.

Do you have a crib/playpen for my infant?
I have a crib/playpen available at no charge.

Is the house quiet?
Because of the reasons stated above, it is very quiet. The neighbors are not loud music types and there is no through traffic on the street. The backyard/garden is especially peaceful.

How’s the nightlife nearby? Is it close?
It is quite the perfect place for young adults: I’m in the very center of the city, walking distance or 5 minute driving distance to all the nightclubs and music venues. (Roxy, Knitting Factory, Avalon, countless other dance clubs, etc.)

Are there markets/grocery stores nearby?
As to grocery stores, etc.: there are at least 4 large supermarket/grocery stories within a 3-5 minute drive. There is a large pharmacy (Rite Aid) and convenience store (7-11) in 2-5 minute walking distance. For those that don’t know Rite-Aid, it has all personal hygiene products, some food products, beverages, medical and pharmacy needs, camera and electrical equipment and much more. There is a CVS pharmacy store open 24 hours within a 5 minute drive.

There is a wonderful farmer’s market on Sunday within 5 minutes walking distance, which is distinctly Hollywood because the people who live here all buy their fresh produce there. It’s very lively and has a lot to offer, from music to every type of food (as I say, it’s only on Sundays). Don’t confuse this with the world-famous Farmer’s Market and the Grove, which are a 10 minute drive. Both should be on your must-do list.

Are the pictures accurate? How about the video?
Absolutely. (I may have moved a lamp or so by the time you stay there, but generally what you see is what you get). The video was taken in the fall of 2010.

When was the house built?
The guest house was built in 2008. The main house was built in 1920; the houses in this neighborhood were owned by studio workers for the nearby studios (Paramount, Charlie Chaplin Studios, etc.)

How far is it to the beach?
It is 35 minutes with no traffic to Santa Monica, and could be 50 minutes with traffic. It depends what time of day you go, and which beach you would like. Malibu beach is 1 hour away. By public transport, the trip to the beach is a bit longer: consult http://www.experiencela.com/GettingAround.

How far are the airports?
Burbank airport is 20 minutes away. LAX-Los Angeles International is 35 minutes with no traffic, 40-50 if you are driving in the morning or evening rush hour. I have a special, direct route that I send you by email that saves you time and traffic.

Do I need to rent a car?
Sadly, our L.A. Metro doesn’t cover the whole city. But The Bungalow is in the most central location in L.A. for tourists. You can walk to major subways (also known as L.A. metro) within 7 minutes. From there, you can go one stop to Universal Studios and 15 minutes to downtown, Chinatown, L.A. Live., Staples Center, Disney Hall, connections to go to Old Town Pasadena. You can walk to major Hollywood attractions and tour bus stops within about 5-10 minutes at the most(Kodak Theatre, Hollywood tour buses, Walk of Fame are all a couple of blocks away). You can take relatively inexpensive 10-15 minute cab rides to several of the local shopping areas and neighborhoods, such as The Grove, L.A. County Museum of Art, Burbank Studios, and Beverly Hills, or you can get public transportation that may take a little more time to those locales because it will involve buses as opposed to L.A. metro trains. (The Grove, Beverly Hills, and the County Museum of Art are quite easy by bus). Personally, I admit that I still recommend a car rental because it makes it easier to experience the beach or go to Santa Monica or several other areas that you’ll want to visit. The beaches, for example, are 40 mins by car and at least 1 hour by bus. Think of the beaches as the ‘west side’, downtown as the ‘east side’, and Hollywood as the ‘middle’.

What does the cleaning fee cover?
It covers cleaning prior to your arrival and after your departure. If you’d like to have the cleaning person come during your stay, it can be arranged for an extra fee.

What a wonderful time we had staying at Kirby's! With 3 kids we could easily walk most places and felt extremely safe in doing so. The accommodations were perfect and truly home like. We were sad to leave and wish we had of stayed there even longer. Kirby is an amazing host who gave us many suggestions, was helpful and friendly- we just wish we could have spent more time chatting with him. Perfect stay.
