We are four friends from Barcelona and we really enjoyed our experience at Sheila's apartment. Our first impression was a bit disappointing because the pictures looked bigger, but we immediately liked it for its character and its history, and we thought it was very cozy, although the stairs are quite noisy, but eventually you get used. Sheila was a perfect host, she explain us a lot of things about the neighborhood and New York. She brought gifts to my friend for her birthday, she was very kind. She also show us the other apartment at the first floor, it is very beautiful and perfect for a couple. We loved the neighborhood, people was very nice and friendly with us. It was an authentic way of living these days in New York.
I have mixed feelings about staying at B's suite. The area is a little dodgy by night but gorgeous by day. The metro, supermarket and some very nice small restaurants and bars are on walking distance.
The apartment is as if time has been standing still for the last 40 years. This is nice. The stairs and floors are extremely squeaky. So bring some earplugs. This will also also be helpful to block the street noise. By night the street are filled with a lot of loud people with a very limited vocabular.
The shower is great! The beds are oke BUT the mattresses have a plastic sheets on them. This is horrific to sleep on. Its like sleeping in a diaper.
We removed one matress from the bunk and put this on top of the couch (which is a sleeping sofa). This was better than sharing the bunk :)
Sheila is a special host. She has a list of check-in and -out rules that all needs to be handled. This takes some time. At checking out we were asked what we did with the fryingpan because she couldnt find it.. like a father and his two sons from Holland would take the frying pan! :) .. after that the tv was checked .. At first no signal.. so the suggestion was made we broke it.. when I asked her about this we got this answer.. 'I dont know why but the visitors get more and more difficult each year'. I think that was very very rude.
My conclusion. One would expect a little more for the costs of this apartment. Ad a little extra to it.. make a nice manual of the house and give some tips about the area.. Replace the plastic linnen and glasses for the real thing.
One final advise to the owner.. Safe the environment and you wallet: replace the stove for one without the pilot light. This small flame uses an extreme amount of gas, with an average monthly costs of $18,-
The PLUS side...place is in a Brooklyn residential area. Near to Subway stations. Express train gets you to Manhatten in 20 Minutes. Supermarket and plenty of
"ethnic food" restaurants nearby. However not for those looking for "Goumet" kitchen.Multi-cultural population, polite and friendly.
The place itself.. You have to make concessions to the fact that the Brownhouse is over 100 years old.
Two points we found worth improving. Hairdryer in bathroom but NO socket. Pillows and matresses covered by some plastic protection. Gives you the feeling you sleep on a plastic bag .
Owner..Sheila.. very helpful
Definitely an appartment with real Brooklyn character: high ceilings, wooden floors and the signature outside stairs. Unfortunately that also includes creaking floorboards and quite some nighttime noise from the city that never sleeps. However, the appartment is super clean, the neighbourhood is good (supermarket, metro stations, laundry, playground all within a few blocks) and Sheila is super friendly. Don't be fooled by the Michelin-rated restaurant around the corner though: they don't have a kids menu and serve un-American small portions of food...
We are three young professionals in our 30s and seasoned travelers who stayed at B’s Suite for 3 nights. Being city girls, the neighbourhood did not phase us though it could be a little rough for a family with young children or people from the country side. The apartment was very clean, close to subway and bus and well equipped. Though we would suggest getting groceries from bigger market places rather than convenient stores located at every corner. They are everywhere but with limited produce and sketchy people. Overall great experience and perfect for our needs. The only downside would be our host. She was invasive. She took an hour and a half to explain simple things we didn’t need explaining like how to flush a toilet or where to find the dishes in the kitchen. We did try to wrap it up but she insisted on taking her time to explain every detail. Even though the first thing you want is to settle in and relax after a long drive, Sheila will take her good old time before she hands you the keys, on which she will give you a test. She also did come in the apartment while we were out which we did not appreciate one bit. We like that the host is available and close by but we will reach out if needed…we don’t like being snooped in. So overall it would be a 4 stars but the host did spoil it a bit.
Great place to stay. Clean, confortable and safe. Sheila was very friendly, kind and helpful. A big advantage is the apartment is a few blocks away from the subway, and one hour to JFK airport. There are many shops around. People of Brooklyn are very friendly! I enjoyed this place very much.
We spent a wonderful 10 days in New York during Christmas 2014, staying in the apartment of Sheila.
The apartment is in a classical Brooklyn style area and building. With two separate bedrooms, well equipped kitchen and spacious living room, the apartment fulfilled all our needs and expectations.
A big advantage was the location as it is situated just 10 min walks from the Norstrand Av. metro station for the A express line. With this line You can get everywhere in Manhatan in 15-20 min.
Sheila, the owner of the apartment was very kind and helpful. We got from here all information’s we needed.
I highly recommend this apartment for everybody searching a good value/price budget apartment visiting New York.
B's Suite is a very attractive apartment on the top floor of a late 19th century city house in a quiet part of Brooklyn. The owner Sheila is a kind and helpfull host. The apartment is only a few blocks away from Nostrand Avenue subway station on the A line. Only 15 minutes to Manhattan and less than an hour to the terminals on JFK airport.
Shops, supermarket and many fastfood facilities at close range.
We would certainly recommend B's suite for a short stay in New York.
B's Place was home away from home. Our family's every need was met at B's Place or in the family friendly neighborhood. Ms. Sheila provided snacks, gave us great directions on how to get around and there are wonderful soul food restaurants just steps away. The home is clean and spacious. The home is old with original wood floors so every step provides a unique echo. Bed is firm and 2 nd bedroom is connected to master bedroom which was perfect for our family. DVD, CD and 21" flat screen tv with basic cable available. Kitchen equipped with basic cooking needs. I would stay there again. Communicate specific check-in and check-out times in advance and anything else you might need and Ms. Sheila will attempt to fulfill your every need. Great Place to Stay!
