This hotel apartment was built in the early 1900’s and acquired by the late Estelle Essex, an actress and close friend and confidant of the first female cinema super star of silent movies, Mary Pickford, the first actor to own her own production company. It has been said that Estelle Essex acquired this place so she could be close to her friend Mary, who had just bought a building in the mid-Wilshire area.

This hotel apartment was built before City Hall, going back to when Wilshire Boulevard was a string of cornfields. The rear building was originally a carriage house and has since been transformed into hotel garden apartments.

Legend has it that travelers on their way across California to the Pacific Coast would stop here, to rest themselves and their horses before continuing on their journey to the Pacific Coast. They would house their buggies and horses at the rear of the property, in the carriage house. Coachmen would stay above the carriage house, so they could attend to the horses. The narrow driveway along the east side of the building was just wide enough for a horse drawn carriage, and the jacuzzi and picnic area was originally used for the turn-around and bridling of horses.

Registration/Payment
These terms and conditions apply to all guests, sponsors, and their invitees. Guests and sponsors shall be jointly and severally liable for all charges incurred by them or their invitees, and for any damaged or missing hotel property and any increased rate due to additional guests or change in length of stay. At time of reservation, a credit card will be charged for the deposit described, including tax. Remaining charges for the reserved stay shall be charged to a credit card upon check-in, in addition to a refundable security deposit authorization of $30.00 per day, but at least $200. A valid photo ID (passport, drivers license or ID card) is required of each guest upon check in. We may choose not to rent to anyone too close to the requested stay or to anyone under 21, and if we choose to rent under such circumstances, we may require a sponsor and/or a greater security deposit.

As a courtesy to non-smokers and for safety purposes, smoking is not allowed in the hotel apartments or within any area of the hotel. However, guests may smoke on the front porch of the hotel where there is a bench and ashtray. Should a guest smoke in a room, costs of cleaning, etc., to remove the stench, will be charged in an amount of at least $100.00.

Guests understand that there is no lifeguard on duty in the gated Jacuzzi area which is supposed to remain locked, but which could be left open by a guest. Guests will assure that any children they bring into the hotel will be supervised at all times in all areas of the hotel, and particularly in or near the jacuzzi area.

The room is carefully inspected and inventoried before check-in and after check-out. A guest and sponsor shall be liable and their credit cards and security deposits may be charged either before or after a guest has checked out, upon discovery of any hotel property removed or damaged by a guest or guest’s invitee, any mechanical or plumbing problems, including those caused by foreign objects dropped into a low flow toilet, any extraordinary cleaning expenses and stain removal, and any increased rates due to a change in length stay and/or number or ages of occupants. Charges shall include all required labor, time, and incidental expenses and all resulting losses, including lost income.

No guest or invitee shall disturb the peace, create any type of nuisance, waste resources or utilities, leave air conditioning, heat, lights, or appliances on when guests are gone, damage, stain, or remove property, fail to maintain premises in a sanitary, healthful condition, or engage in any illegal activities. No parties are allowed on the premises. No pets of any kind are allowed on the premises. 4 of us stayed here for our first trip to LA. And for the price we paid it was absolutely worth it. We were surprised to see how new the appliances were and how clean the place was. Extra clean sheets, tons of clean towels available right in the apartment for use. Super clean kitchen and appliances. A very well maintained place. There was free parking in a gated area by the building, which was great. The extra fun part is that there was a hot tub for my friends and I to chill in after a long day of touring the city. Great location, easy to drive to our destinations within the city.
We are planning to stay here again for sure.
