The Alfama Quarter is the oldest one in Lisbon, and it was founded by the Arabs who named it “Al-hama” (the fountains). It is difficult to believe that this humble neighborhood was once the most desirable quarter of Lisbon. For the Moors, the tightly packed alleyways around the fortified castle comprised the whole city.
The buildings survived the 1755 earthquake and although there are no Moorish houses still standing, the quarter retains its kashbah-like-layout. The true charm of these quarters lies in its narrow steep streets ending in sunny squares from which there are stairways leading to typical streets and flowery alleys and fountains. This is where you can find the most genuine traditional commerce, far away from the big hypermarkets, with neighborhood groceries, fruit stands, modest restaurants, and all purpose stores. The only way to get to know these quarters is to stroll through them. Embark on this adventure, let your intuition guide you and get lost in these streets and alleys to the sound of Fado.
Above Alfama the imposing, majestic and sober Castelo de São Jorge (Castle of Saint Jorge), crowns Lisbon´s most important eastern hill. This natural vantage point, was a defensive stronghold and royal palace until the end of the 16th century.
Other Attractions are a few steps away. You will need to climb just a few streets to find yourself in front of the Pantheon, or at the Flea Market (If you are interested in antique stuff and second hand bargains you can find almost everything at the Feira da Ladra flea Market every Saturday and Tuesday in Campo de Santa Clara). To eat there are quite a few cheap typical Portuguese tascas around, but if you are more into sophisticated stuff don´t miss the Bica do Sapato restaurant (co-owned by the actor John Malkovich), Lisbon´s hippest and trendiest restaurant, or the Faz Figura restaurant featuring Portuguese specialties and an impressive city and river views. Here, the visitor will be also close to the most recent and trendiest nightlife routes, beginning in the new Alfama fado parlours and ending up in Clube Ferroviário or at the famous and trendy Lux nightclub.

A really lovely apartment in a typical district in Lisboa. The host was very friendly and informed us about all the important things in the flat and the city. We spent 3 nights there and had a great time. Also the flat was really big enough for 2 persons and you really feel like an inhabitant with all the people there.

We were made very welcome on our arrival in Lisbon. We have not met Jorge, Francisco opened the apartment and gave us all the necessary explanations. The apartment is very well located in the Alfama district, near the station of Santa Appolonia and enjoyed its location. In a few days we felt to become real locals. The apartment is clean, very nice, big enough for two people A report glitch flush, it takes a little technique that works well! But nothing too complicated .. We can recommend this place, we had a very pleasant stay. Frances and Vincent.

Nice little apartment, very well located in the Alfama district of Lisbon, one of the oldest and most picturesque. It lives among the population, with its daily entertainment. We were very well received, and check out the hosts are accommodating and keep your luggage for the day if your flight leaves late. Just a small inconvenience in the apartment, the bathroom is very small and hunting Moorhen was a small malfunction, but for a week it is not very important and everything went well. The room is spacious and has a small adjoining room that serves as a dressing room, very convenient. The nights are pleasant and not too hot, because the apartment is on the first floor and located in small shaded lanes. The area is well served by public transport, train, tram and metro close enough. We recommend this place for an economical and enjoyable.

Lovely little apartment in a great location amongst the winding lanes of Alfama.

We were greeted by a friendly guy, not the owner, who advised us what we could do in the area and gave us his number in case we needed anything and we were able to contact him when we needed to arrange check-out.

The apartment is basic but nicely decorated and clean. It is a big enough space for two but the bathroom is very small and there could have been a sofa in the dining/living room to make it a bit more comfortable and relaxed rather than just sitting at the table and chairs all the time. You have some patio doors you can open out with a little balcony to lean out of on to the street below and from the back a view down the street to the river.

We had a bit of a problem with the shower not staying in place and the flush on the toilet is a bit fiddly but nothing major and we fixed the loose screw in the shower after a couple of days so it was fine.

It is just down some steps from a really nice viewing point over lisbon and lots of little bars, restaurants and monuments like the St. George's castle, there's a really nice neighbourhood atmosphere unlike some of the more central areas that are busy with tourists all day and night.

I would definitely go again :)

CASTLE apartment, inside the castle walls. Low Budget for 4

Lisbon Centre 4 - great location
