The Second World War and the division of Berlin created many vacant lots, which were filled with modern buildings. Thus, the typical Berlin mix of old and new was created. Many of the new buildings, such as the television tower at Alexanderplatz, the Sony Center, Berlin Philharmonic and the New National Gallery turned into must-see attractions. The well-known Tiergarten Park, one of the largest parks in the city, is situated in the western part of the district Mitte.
The quarter offers several bars and clubs such as ‘Tresor’, ‘Clärchens Ballhaus’, or ‘Felix’. The nightlife of neighboring Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Schöneberg can be reached in a very short time.
Berlin Mitte is, due to its central location, a transportation hub and is thus well connected to the neighboring districts. The U-Bahn U2, U5, U6 and U8, and the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S5, S7 and S75 cross the district. The districts of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg are also reachable via several tramlines.
