“Casa dos Guindais” ,is an XVIII century house, located in the historic center of Oporto, that has seen great moments of history, both sad and glorious from French invasions in 1810 ,to the more recent“ Carnation Revolution” in 1974 bringing Portugal to democracy. World heritage protected by Unesco near by the Ferdinand Wall, the Cathedral and funicular elevator .The place, once a family house were many generations lived and grew up , is now rebuilt to its original splendor by architects Sofia Marques de Aguiar and Ernesto Jimenes , and it is now ready to welcome guests.
The owners, Francisca Pestana da Silva heiress of the estate and Álvaro Marques de Aguiar thought of making this place a comfortable lodge to spend a relaxed weekend or a short vacation whilst in the heart of the city. They both come from different professional backgrounds, he being an Aviator from early age and his wife Francisca a marketer associated with arts. She served at National Theater for a few good years. They comment:” The diversity of our live experiences helps us dealing with a multicultural visitor that now comes to Oporto…”and “We hope to be able to meet our guest’s expectations, making their stay worthwhile to remember”.
The restoration of the building complied with the original plan and allowed to preserve some old elements in a project with lines marked by modernity and simplicity.
The materials used are noble and respect the rules of conservation of historic buildings in the city - Wood, Glass, Iron and Granite.
The location is outstanding, being close to everything worth visiting, the street ending in stone steps, leading you to the river allowing only pedestrians and very quiet.
Only 200 meters there is the Cathedral, the National Theatre S. João, renowned Art nouveau ”Café Magestic” and shopping district .
São Bento Railway Station, the main square and Nasoni’s Clérigos Tower easily reachable by foot.
Very close to our place you find the funicular cable car named “Guindais” that takes you right down the Douro river bridges, Port wine cellars, picturesque shops, bistros, bars and restaurants.
Enjoy Porto..
