This cute A-frame house comfortably sleep 5 adults plus kids. It features a Zen-style master bedroom upstairs, with big French doors that open out onto a private lanai with a sweeping view of the ocean. This room has a queen bed. There is also a bedroom downstairs with a Queen bed and a view of the ocean.
It also has an office with a couch that opens up into a bed that would be acceptable for a child. There is also a comfortable futon couch in the living room that opens into a double bed, and another futon couch on the lanai. There are also 2 twin airbeds. The house is sparsely furnished.
Fully-equipped kitchen with free papayas and bananas—and mangos when in season—as well as Kona coffee and tea (black and herbal). I like to cut a papaya in half, remove the seeds, slice in a banana and squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top. Yum!
We have the ideal climate, usually between 68-78 degrees, with refreshing trade winds. It’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with plenty of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep and coqui frogs. In the late afternoons, the children enjoy playing in the street. On occasion, the neighbors’ hunting dogs get excited, especially when the wild boar wander down from the hills.
There is free parking in front of the house and it's a very safe neighborhood. You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19.
This is an excellent central location, just 30 minutes north of Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo, with much less vog (smog from the volcano) than in Kona.
The house is just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the rocks
Going south, the house is about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum.
Or you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further North to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another quarter hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world-class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring a set of warm clothes for that trip!).
A half hour past Waimea will bring you to some of the world’s finest white sands beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna.
