The Ultimate Guide To Packing For Your Trip

Packing for a holiday is a tricky and nuanced skill. Avoiding looking like Quasimodo at the airport is sometimes inevitable but there are certain things that you can learn.

Do Your Research

Here’s one simple tip to take into consideration – do your research. That and common sense will get you a long way. The weather in Greenland is not going to be the same as it is in India. Some countries are pretty straight forward but others can be a bit of a mystery.

You’ve now freed up extra room to fit in the long list of presents you need to bring home.
Don’t expect the sun to be shining in Dublin just because your calendar tells you it is July 24th! Leaving your packing to a couple of days before you leave will give you sufficient time to be provided with an accurate weather forecast. Such advanced thinking will leave you with a strong idea of what kind of holiday you will have – a beachside forray or hours spent in front of a log fire with 10 layers of clothes on. It will allow you to eliminate the ‘just in case’ items in your suitcase. You’ve now freed up extra room to fit in the long list of presents you need to bring home.

Going on a shopping holiday? No? Well then make it one!

More often than not it is cheaper just to purchase any toiletries needed at the local supermarket or drugstore of your holiday destination. Such products are often so cheap that they can be left behind afterwards. If you are travelling in a group, splitting the cost of the items will make it even less of an expense, and sharing the products will more likely than not see them used up by the time your trip is over. No waste!

The Art Of Flexibility

Like our previous advice has stated, do your research first and determine as best as possible what kind of climate you will be experiencing. There’s a chance the weather will vary from place to place. In these cases – layer up! Summer clothes can be worn underneath warmer clothes to help you survive some harsher temperatures. Those crafty fashion designers have come up with some wonderful creations to help people like you out of your predicament. That’s right, with the help of zips, buttons and velcro, pants can become shorts and jackets can become waistcoats – handy!

When A More Simple Life Is Yearned For

Life doesn’t always have to be so complicated and neither does packing. If you don’t want to buy detachable clothing or toiletries abroad, then fine. Just make sure that you have room for them. We all know how certain airlines can be picky in relation to the weight of your suitcase! Those who are not so fashion conscious can opt for the old ‘wear one, wash one, have one’ trick. It may sound very little, but ladies will know very well just how many outfits can be created from only 6 items of clothing. If this sounds like your ultimate nightmare x2, use colour coordination skills to limit your load instead. The key here is to hugely restrict the number of shoes you pack. Pick your most comfortable and neutral shoes and work your outfits around them. Do this with any accessories and jackets you bring too!

The outfits have been chosen and whittled down to the lowest number possible.

A vibrant mesh of cottons, jerseys, silks and satins are strewn across your bed. For the second time because the toiletries you insist on bringing simply won’t fit in. Take some advice from Tina Turner and start “rollin’”. Rolling your clothes frees up much more space than the old-fashioned folding routine of our ancestors. With a bit of luck some of your clothing will be wrinkle free.
