Reviews for this host's other properties

"As much as we understand the inconvenience, it is legal to undergo constructions works from 08:00 until 19:00." This quote from Feels Like Home customer service describes the main problem we had with our stay, but it was a serious problem which made the apartment unusable during the daytime for much of our stay. There was no chance of taking an undisturbed afternoon nap, for example. My wife and I enjoyed our stay in Porto anyway, but only because the weather was good and we were out for most of the day.
Not everything was bad about this flat, and to start with the good points, the main bed (for two people) was freshly made and very comfortable and the location was ideal, in a short street on the edge of the tourist centre ending in a shady plaza with several restaurants, just where tram line 1 begins at Infante on the river. It was a short walk to the centre of town and most of the tourist attractions.
But we were surprised when we arrived to find dust on all of the table and counter surfaces, broken plaster on the floor in the bathroom and the unused back room and a puddle of water in the bathroom. There was dust in the kitchen as well, no dish towel and no wine glasses. The next day we discovered that the apartment one floor above was being renovated with very loud hammering going on. When we heard a crash in the back room we found even more plaster on the floor and a hole in the ceiling, so we called the Feels Like Home office to report the damage. After an hour someone came to have a look and to speak to the workmen above.
He apologized for the state of the apartment; apparently it hadn't been rented for a while and although it was cleaned when the last guests left, that was some time ago. After he spoke with the workers on the floor above we were told that they were finished with the hammering and the owner of our flat would have no claims for damage because he was also the owner of the flat above us.
Despite that it was not possible to have the work stopped while we were living in the apartment and what angers us very much is that the owner knew there would be intolerable noise and released our apartment for rental anyway. After the representative's visit our complaints about the cleanliness of the apartment were taken care of quickly and a cleaning service came and tidied the apartment about an hour later. Wine glasses and a dish towel were brought, but the promised second cleaning service during our ten-day stay was never carried out, the towels were never replaced and the bottle of wine we were promised as compensation for our complaint was forgotten as well. The work upstairs was in fact quieter for the next two days and over the weekend, but it began again with even louder drilling and hammering the second week of our stay. Fortunately the work didn't start until about 9:30 am, so we lost no sleep, but loud construction work also began on a building just across the narrow street, so there will be no peace and quiet to be had in Porto Lusitano for quite some time.
Apart from the noise this is a modestly equipped apartment, not luxurious but comfortable enough for a short stay for two people or three using the sofa in the living room. There is free WiFi and a TV with only Portuguese channels. The kitchen has a refrigerator, a stove, a microwave and a coffee maker, but no oven. We did not use it and even went out for coffee so we cannot say much about its suitability for cooking. One other problem during our stay was an invasion of flying ants emerging into the hall through a crack in the frame of the bathroom door. Their bodies covered the floor and the cleaning service did come to sweep them up, but did no further cleaning.
This is an old, historical house and the stairway to the apartment is steep and somewhat uneven. It is fine for healthy people, but anyone with a motion impediment might find it hard to negotiate.
Checkout time on the day we left should have been at 11am, but we could see that no new guests were coming until three days later and since our flight was in the evening we asked if we could use the apartment until mid-afternoon. Feels Like Home was very reluctant to grant us more than an additional hour or two, since someone might show up to rent the apartment (not knowing about the noise), but after a second phone call during the worst commotion from upstairs and some insistance on our part we were finally allowed to stay until it was time to leave for the airport. The telephone contacts in Porto were much friendlier than the email contacts in Lisbon.
To sum up, currently it is hard to recommend this apartment to anyone who wants to use it during the daytime, since the noise is intolerable and will continue to be so for some time, at least from the site across the road. Complaints about noise fell on deaf ears. But there is construction everywhere in Porto so the same comment may apply to other apartments as well. What is especially annoying here is that much of the noise was being created by the landlord himself, who is trying to have his cake and eat it too.
Without the noise and other impediments it could be a good base for a pleasant stay in Porto. We did get a good night's sleep and the location was very convenient, but anyone wishing to rent it should check first on the progress of nearby construction and bring very good ear plugs.
A very nice apartment with all the comfort you need. It is spacious, two bedrooms with good mattresses, large bathroom and a large terrace. The bakery and supermarkets are at a five minutes walk.
The equipment (furniture, tableware, dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator) were like new.
The surroundings is quiet and the nearest metrostation is fifteen minutes walk. Tram 28 stops at 100 meter from the appartment.
Appartement in super guter Lage, Grenze Baixa-Alfama. 5 m vom vom Zentrum.
